Fertilizing

You have all seen the “3 digit ratio” on fertilizing bags but do you understand the significance of the ratio? Let us explain: “16-10-8”.

1st Digit (Nitrogen): Nitrogen will thicken and enhance the pigmentation of the grass blades. When the nitrogen value is over 24, it is known as a quick release fertilizer. Our analogy for quick release fertilizers are steroids. You will have rapid growth and thicker grass immediately, however you will need to cut the lawn very often, your lawn may burn out or you may stunt your lawn’s growth. Nitrogen values under 24 are known as slow release fertilizers. For even distribution of nutrients within 6 to 8 weeks, it is best to use slow release fertilizers. We at Canadian Soil Landscaping only use slow release fertilizers because it will provide a greater benefit to your lawn’s health and overall appearance.

2nd Digit (Phosphorus): Phosphorous primarily increases the depth of your root system. Phosphorous values range between 8 and 20 and they are adjusted accordingly to how much nitrogen is mixed within the fertilizer.

3rd Digit (Potassium): Potassium strengthens both the root system and grass stalking. Potassium values range between 2 to 16 and they are adjusted accordingly to how much nitrogen is mixed within the fertilizer.
